My Helmet and I: An Excellent Relationship

I recently had the misfortune of having a carriage driving related accident, or, a “mishap”, as I prefer to label it. Perhaps by referring to it as a “mishap”, it “softens” the reality for me. Accident or mishap, no matter how I chose to label it, it truly is my own reality. I’m not in a form of denial; it is just my way of processing the event of Sunday September 22, 2019...

Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Breaks Membership Record Again

Troxel is proud to be the Official Helmet of IEA and to support this growing organization that offers amazing opportunities to young riders.

Celebrating its 18th season, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) has again set a record for membership.  This season (2019-2020), membership numbers topped out at 14,444.  While the highest concentration of members is East of the Mississippi; the Western states are experiencing a greater percentage of growth – especially in Zone 10 in California where IEA will hold the 2020 Hunt Seat National Finals in Burbank, California this April.  The recent addition of the 4th and 5th grade Intro Rider Program as well as the explosion of interest in the new Dressage program has attracted many new IEA participants.

In 2002, IEA started with 175 riders on 13 teams and has become the largest youth equestrian organization in the Country and the largest feeder organization to collegiate equestrian programs – offering tens of thousands in scholarship awards and opportunities each season.  Importantly, there is no need for any rider to own a horse to participate in the IEA.  However, the participating teams and barns are expected to provide horses and equipment for the competitions.  The IEA utilizes a draw-based form of competition whereby riders are given an unknown mount on which they compete – leveling the playing field and challenging the rider’s ability to adapt to different horses each ride.

Our goal was never to become the largest ‘anything,’ said Roxane Durant, IEA Co-Founder and Executive Director. “We have, however, stayed true to our core of introducing young horse enthusiasts to equestrian sport.  We also wanted our student-riders to be recognized as the athletes they are.  The success is a testament to delivering equestrian sport to a previously underserved marketplace demand. We have seen tremendous success in our first year of the Intro Rider Pilot Program and look forward to expanding it even further next season.”

The IEA Board of Directors, management and staff credit the thousands of volunteers who assist the organization, coaches and riders in making the organization successful. “It is a wonderful sense of Community among those associated with the IEA,” stated Durant. “With over 800 IEA horse shows across the nation and more than 92,000 rides each year – it would be impossible to operate without tremendous volunteer support.”

IEA Membership rates are very affordable and are the same for all disciplines – Hunt Seat, Western and Dressage.  Fees are $60 per individual member for the season.  Teams are $150.  Enrollment for the 2020-2021 season will open June 2020 with competitions beginning September 1, 2020.  Early Bird discounts are also available.

Add Shade and Sun Protection to Troxel Helmets with the New Helmet Brimmer™

Mt Hope, Ohio - Troxel helmets is proud to introduce the new Helmet Brimmer™, an accessory that allows the addition of shade and sun protection to most any Troxel helmet model. Constructed of a 4 ½” wide genuine palm leaf brim with visor pocket, elastic helmet band and patent pending helmet attachment system, the Helmet Brimmer™ can easily and securely be attached and removed as needed from most Troxel helmet models.

“Many riders over the years have asked us for ways to add additional sun protection to their helmet or a way to make their helmet look more like a cowboy hat. More riders than ever are choosing to trade in their cowboy hat for a helmet but miss the sun protection and traditional look a cowboy hat provides,” said Troxel Brand Manager, Jenny Beverage. “We’ve seen riders cut up various types of hats to create something that would fit on their helmet to add sun protection or to create a cowboy hat look. As a result, our team has been hard at work developing a solution that would address both needs.” The Helmet Brimmer™ currently comes in a cowboy hat style brim shape for riders who want to add a more western look and add sun protection to their Troxel helmet. The great versatility of the Helmet Brimmer™ is that since it’s made of palm leaf, it can be easily wet and reshaped to your style preference if a different brim shape is preferred.

The New Helmet Brimmer™ is available in a size A and size B according to what model and size Troxel helmet it will be placed on.  A size chart and instructions are available at https://www.troxelhelmets.com/products/helmet-brimmer and the Helmet Brimmer™can be found online and through Troxel retail partners nationwide.

Cowboy Swagger is 2019 TCA Thoroughbred Makeover Champion With Fallon Taylor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Champion barrel racer Fallon Taylor takes on a new challenge every year: in 2018, she took up showjumping. This year, she took on the Thoroughbred Makeover. Already a champion — she was the 2014 Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Champion and 2018 AQHA World Champion — Taylor can add one more line to her deep resume: trainer of the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover Champion, Cowboy Swagger.

Much like winning the average in a rodeo, Taylor and Cowboy Swagger’s consistent, steady performances earned them victory in the Barrel Racing discipline at the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America. Taylor didn’t lead after the horsemanship component, nor did she set the fastest times in the two daily barrel runs, but through those consistent performances she maintained the best overall scores in the division. After clinching the championship in Barrel Racing, Taylor’s fan base rallied behind her to vote her to the overall title.

In the TCA Covered Arena for the voting and award presentation, Cowboy Swagger stood quietly as the other horses circled around him, with just a set of reins around his neck and a massive blanket of roses that Taylor had made specially for her Thoroughbred barrel horse. A casual bystander might not guess that this horse just a few hours ago had been agilely turning barrels and sprinting for home flat-out in the same arena.

“I think the coolest thing about these Thoroughbreds is their demeanor,” Taylor commented. “This is a special, unique horse. I’m just sitting here with no bridle on, people all around, all these cameras pointed at him, and he’s completely unaffected. The Thoroughbreds want to please. And these guys are made to run — they’re made for this job. It’s our job to be kind, be patient and help these horses learn the pattern and learn their new job. We need to go out and get these horses and scoop them up!”

Taylor acquired Cowboy Swagger based on the advice of a friend who knew the horse on the track and loved his personality. He was bred in Oregon by Dr. and Mrs. Jack B. Root Jr., and as of his last start on January 8, 2019 at Portland Meadows he was trained by Sam Dronen. By Grindstone out of the Baquero mare One Fast Cowgirl, Cowboy Swagger made 16 starts with three wins for total earnings of $20,299.

As a savvy social media personality, Taylor understands how to lever that fan base for a good cause. She’s documented her journey to the Makeover with Cowboy Swagger over the past few months, but that turned out to be just the beginning. “I documented every single ride that I took on this horse so that I can keep sharing that next year with my following and help more people try this competition,” she detailed.

“The horsemanship pattern was a challenge for me,” Taylor admitted earlier in the week. “But I like knowing that the horses are leaving the Makeover with a good foundation, especially if they’re selling at the Marketplace, to know that the next rider is going to have a really cool horse to play with later.”

And as for what this particular personal challenge has taught Taylor that she’ll take away to apply to her other barrel horses? “I’ve had to really be patient with this horse, and that’s going to help me on my other horses as well.”

Troxel Becomes Official Helmet of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association

Mt Hope, OH – September, 2019 – Troxel helmets is excited to announce a new three-year partnership with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) as their Official Helmet. With over 4 million helmets in the field and a safety record second to none, Troxel continues to partner with forward thinking organizations to help break the stigma regarding helmet use in western riding disciplines.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with the WPRA as their Official Helmet. It’s an honor to have Troxel be part of such an iconic women’s association that understands the long term value of increasing rider safety in order to continue to grow the sport into the future, ” said Jenny Beverage, Troxel Brand Manager.

To further encourage helmet use among members, Troxel and the WPRA will be offering a new $500 added money Helmet Incentive during the 2019 WPRA World Finals on October 24-27 in Waco, TX. “This is our first time offering an incentive like this at the WPRA World Finals. We are so pleased to be able to promote rider safety with Troxel at such a large event and reward our contestants for participating,” said Doreen Wintermute, WPRA President/CEO.

It’s been over four years now since Troxel Athlete and WPRA member Fallon Taylor stormed into the Thomas and Mack Arena at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas wearing a helmet. History was made as Fallon Taylor won the 2014 Barrel Racing World Championship, all while wearing a helmet. “When you ride a bike, motorcycle, go snowboarding or do other wild things, people don’t look at you like you are crazy for wearing a helmet. We ride 1200 pound animals on hard ground…..think about it, it doesn’t seem all that crazy to wear one!” exclaims WPRA member Fallon Taylor.

Troxel is proud to keep paving the way with their athletes and the WPRA in the world of rodeo, to encourage riders to proudly wear a helmet.

The WPRA is the oldest women’s sports association in the country and the only one governed entirely by women.

Time To Ride Launches 2019 Pilot Program

Washington, DC – April, 2019 – Time To Ride®, a program of the American Horse Council’s Marketing Alliance, is now accepting applications for its 2019 pilot program.

The new Time To Ride program is designed to introduce school-age children to horseback riding and horse care in a safe, welcoming environment. The goal is to familiarize school-age children with horses through an initial series of lessons that include basic horse care as well as riding.

Equine facilities and instructors must meet specific requirements to be considered for the pilot program. All instructors must either hold a current professional membership with one or more national breed or discipline associations, be certified as an instructor through a recognized program such as Certified Horsemanship Association or licensed as a riding instructor in the state in which they teach.

Barns and instructors meeting the program’s standards will be designated Time To Ride Program Facilities and be given marketing tools, techniques and assistance to help in reaching out to their local schools, youth groups, recreational departments and similar organizations to provide a set of six to eight introductory lessons. The program emulates the golf industry’s The First Tee, in which school-age kids are introduced to golf through a series of lessons at a local golf course. The First Tee has reached 15 million children since its start in 1997.

For 2019, Time To Ride will select 20-30 facilities from across the US to participate in the pilot program, representing a cross-section of breeds and disciplines.

Facilities selected for the pilot program will receive gifts and discounts from Marketing Alliance member companies and organizations, including a free one-year Professional Membership from United States Pony Clubs, free Fan Memberships from US Equestrian, a coupon for a free bag of Purina horse feed, a complimentary copy of Platinum Performance magazine, discounts on purchases from Certified Horsemanship Association, Troxel Helmets, Weaver Leather and more.

To learn more about Time To Ride, review the requirements and apply for the pilot program, visit www.timetoride.org. Preference will be given to applications received by May 1, 2019.

Troxel Helmets Supports Compton Junior Equestrians

Mt Hope, OH – April, 2019 – While the inner city, paved streets of Compton, California are the last place you would expect to find a thriving horse program, the Compton Jr Equestrians along with the Compton Cowboys have created just that — a safe haven for youth to come and enjoy horses. In the tough streets of Compton where violence and drugs are prevalent and many young people turn to gangs for purpose and to keep themselves safe, there is a group of individuals making a difference by giving access to the healing power and emotional connection of horses. Most of the horses used in the program are from the auction and were neglected and abused. One Compton Cowboy said, “I’m not sure if I saved the horse or if the horse saved me.” When Troxel Athlete and World Champion Barrel Racer Fallon Taylor called to say she was going to visit this unique program to feature it on her popular Vlog, Troxel wanted to get involved too.

“We immediately asked if they needed new helmets for their program,” said Troxel Brand Manager Jenny Beverage. “Our team sent several boxes of our most popular Spirit helmet in several colors, graphics and sizes for the Compton Jr Equestrians to use in their program. Although the kids where at school when Fallon was there, we received word back that the kids were very excited to have new helmets!” Fostering new riders is important to grow equestrian sports and programs like the Compton Jr Equestrians offer kids the chance to take a positive path and feel a sense of belonging through interacting with horses and becoming riders.
