The doctor in the emergency room walked to my side. "You have a complete fracture of your clavicle, your scapula is fractured and so are three of your ribs. Without your helmet your skull would have been fractured or worse."
I had just finished taking a riding lesson on my horse. She was walking home - a route we had traveled 50 times or more. My horse is five years. I have trained her over the last year after purchasing her without any training. She is a good, calm, smart Arabian. I felt her tense underneath me. I pulled my left rein to turn her head and dismount. I could feel she was very fearful. Within seconds she bucked, slid down a two-foot drop and bolted left. My foot was driven into the stirrup...I remember thinking "Oh, no - my foot is caught" The next thing I was crashing to the ground onto my right shoulder and head. As my shoulder and head hit the ground I heard a loud crack of bone. I thought it was my skull. My vision went blurry. I was in great pain in my head and clavicle area. I walked for help realizing I could think - I had my helmet on - maybe my head was OK after all. I thanked God for my helmet and the person that took the time to make it so safe.
