Technology- Testimonials- Safety Resources

Those of you who know my horse Mel will find it surprising to learn that he can actually move quite quickly. One of the reasons I bought him was his love of going S-L-O-W. I found out what a big engine he really has. I want to share my experience to remind us all that no matter what, these critters are extremely strong, and will always be 'flight' animals. I got a flight lesson I won't soon forget.

Recently, I took Mel out for a tiny trail ride very close to our home. During this simple ride, on a beautiful day, something scared him. He slammed on the brakes, which lifted my seat bones out of my saddle, and then he spun to the left. I was literally flung into the wild blue yonder. I held on to the reins, innocently thinking it would slow my descent to the ground. That theory lasted until the reins broke. I hit terra firma with resounding thud on my right hip, right shoulder, and right side of my head, in that order.

I won't go on with the other gory details. Thankfully, nothing was broken but I will be a long time in healing both physically and psychologically. Of all the body parts that hit the dirt, my head hurt the worst. I was very thankful to have been wearing my helmet. When I looked at it, there was dirt and grass stuck in the right side. Even though my Troxel helmet did not show obvious damage, I have sent it back to the company for replacement. There might be some structural problems I am not aware of, and I would rather be safe than sorry. Troxel has an "Accident Replacement Policy" which will replace your helmet for a charge based on the model. Not all helmet manufacturers offer this feature.

No matter how small the ride, every time we get on these beasts we love so much, we are taking a chance. Take the time to put on your helmet, and use it every time you get on your horse. I know it saved me from a much more serious injury.
