Are dark helmets hotter than light colored ones?

No, at least not for the rider.

Although the outer shell of a dark colored helmet will get hotter than the outer shell of a light colored helmet, the thick inner EPS (expanded polystyrene ) foam liner is a highly effective insulation, shielding the rider from the outer shell heat.
