Competitive Couture: Western Event Fashion Trends from Horse & Rider Magazine

Here's a sneak peek of Horse & Rider Magazine's April Issue, featuring hot looks for Western riders. Managing Editor Jennifer Paulson shares notes from competitors to inspire your own wardrobe choices for the most popular Western events.

Check out what Laurie Shelton, Dripping Springs, Texas; finalist on “American’s Favorite Trail Horse” and ACTHA competitor wears competitive trail riding:

1. Wrangler Ultimate Riding Jean, $50
Troxel Venture performance helmet, $139.95
3. Ariat Madison shirt, $44.95
4. Justin Boots Bent Rail boots, $180.
What I wear: When I compete, I wear a cowboy hat with a basic shape, but many ACTHA competitors choose helmets for safety. I like a basic long-sleeve button-up top; jeans with a higher rise, like the Wrangler Ultimate Riding Jean; and boots with a walking heel. If there’s any chance of rain, I always pack a slicker.

Trend spotting: ACTHA events are really
a melting pot of style. Every woman wears what best suits her tastes and comfort. Bling is coming into the events through the younger generation, but a lot of us choose a classic look, too.
Time to dig into your closet and see what you can put together (or go shopping!) to update your look. Check out the rest of the Competitive Couture in the April issue of Horse & Rider Magazine.
