Top 10 Reasons To Wear a Helmet

 1. Safety helmets are 80 percent effective in preventing injury and death.

 2. Even a mild concussion can be a life-changing experience.

 3. There is no statistical correlation between skill level and injury likelihood.

 4. Even a fall from a standing horse can be catastrophic. Your injury risk depends on the height from which you fall, not the speed at which you’re traveling.

 5. The bulk of equestrian injuries occur in pleasure riders.

 6. The walk is the most common gait at which riders suffer injuries.

 7. Only 23 percent of mounted accidents occur when jumping.

 8. Head injuries are cumulative. An original head injury can be made much worse by additional concussions.

 9. Head injuries are expensive. Medical expenses for a minor concussion can amount to thousands of dollars. The most catastrophic head injuries average a cost of $4 million.

 10. Riding is more dangerous than downhill skiing and motorcycling.

A friend of mine is taking care of her son that had a head injury. Although the injury was not due to horseback riding, the slip and fall on concrete has changed their whole family's life. I wear my helmet so my family does not have to care for me for the rest of my life.

My troxel helmets have saved my life, twice in the 30+ years I have worn them. I wear them everytime I ride and when I was breeding horses wore them in the breeding shed.I had a fall that was witnessed by a doctor and he thought I was dead and when he got to me I tried to stand up. I had gone off a horse on a road and my head did hit a rock but although I do not remember the impact, I do remember trying to get up, don't remember the ride to the hospital or the ride home.I did check out fine. People still make fun of me for wearing a helmet and my answer is, "I guess I have a brain to protect and you don't". THey are so comfortable and attractive there is no reason not to wear them!

Our sun was hurt (almost everywhere BUT his head) in a horsewreck. however, we made a pact that we'd wear helmets when we were doing sports. Mom got one, too. When we joined drill team, the kids were required to wear their helmets. i wore mine, too. WHen it was time for our performance, the adults were to wear black hats. Except me because of the "family rule". I really felt justified in our rule because others appreciated our rule. Instead of being ridiculed, I've started a movement for the adults in our club to be more safety conscious.

A Troxel helmet saved my life. My reliable barrel horse went into the first fit in the 10 years I had owned him. I was launched head first into the ground from a full run. The Troxel cracked and broke in half, I was unconscious for maybe 10 minutes. I don't remember it, but friends tell me I stood up and walked out of the arena like nothing had happened.

This was a huge injury that changed my life. I would either be dead or brain dead if I hadn't been wearing a helmet.

I have hit my head a few times and I was always wearing a helmet. I ride english but do go to rodeos and it really scares me to see all the children running barrels or doing any kind of event with no helmets. Parents say they'd look stupid....I for one have rather look stupid than dead or brain dead!In UK wearing an helmet is compulsory. You could even get a ticket if riding on the road with no helmet.
